Scale Model Airplanes
Sonoma County Airport - Arrivals Lounge
In 2007 I was hired by Sonoma County to build two replica airplanes for display at the annual Sonoma County Fair Flower Show. The theme for the show that year was based on the Charles Schulz Peanuts characters. Charles Schulz, the internationally renowned cartoonist, was a member of our community. Show designer Greg Duncan titled the show "Snoopy’s Garden of Dreams". The airplanes, a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker tri-plane were the main feature with Snoopy piloting the Camel and the Red Baron in the DR-1.
The planes were 2/3 scale, making them close to full size. With the help of a small group of artisans I was able to build the airplanes in a little over two months time. They were a popular feature in the show for the run of the fair. When the show closed, the planes went into storage and I wondered if I would ever see them again.
In 2022 I was contacted by the Pacific Coast Air Museum. They had possession of the Sopwith Camel. The museum board wanted to know if I would consider restoring their plane for permanent display. Craig Schulz, the son of the cartoonist owned the other plane. As the restoration prospect was being explored, the airport management expressed an interest in displaying both planes in their new multi-million dollar terminal. I was contracted to restore both the Camel and the Fokker. The completed planes now greet passengers as they enter the Arrivals Lounge at the Charles M. Schulz Municipal Airport north of Santa Rosa.
